Hurricane Debby has since weakened to Tropical Storm strength and currently sits over South Carolina. Eventually, Debby weakens into a remnant area of low pressure as the center tracks directly through CNY. The center of this system will bring widespread rain to CNY with some very heavy pockets that is likely to spark flash flooding.
Here’s a look at the Flash Flood Guidance map issued by The National Weather Service. This tells you generally how much rain is needed in a 6-hour time period to cause flash flooding. Notice, it’s about 2 to 2.5 inches of rain needed in 6 hours for most of CNY, up to about 3 inches in Onondaga County, lower amounts for the southern counties only around 1.5 to 2 inches.
Here’s the Flash Flood Guidance for 3-hours:
Here’s the Flash Flood Guidance for 1 hour:
Here’s how much rainfall we could get from the remnants of Debby. Most place will get around 2-3 inches of rainfall, up to 4 inches in spots. To give you some perspective, think of Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4th in 2020. This brought around 1 to 2 inches of rainfall across CNY, up to 3 inches further southeast. We will get slightly more rainfall in the immediate CNY area from Debby, but Isaias is a similar system if you remember what it was like.
Keep in mind, with flooding likely to occur in those pockets of heavy rain, turn around don’t drown. Never drive through flooded roads to prevent flooding injuries or even death.
If you do encounter a flooded road, turn around. It only takes 6 inches of moving water to sweep away a person…
… 12 inches of moving water to sweep away a small car…
… and 2 inches of moving water to sweep away an SUV or truck.
